Esteemed Biologist David Ellis Brest Passes Away at 85

David Ellis Brest, a respected biologist and beloved family man, passed away peacefully at the age of 85, surrounded by his wife, Patricia Brest. A lifelong resident of Southern California, Brest was known for his dedication to both his family and his profession, leaving behind a legacy of love and knowledge.

Born the youngest of three boys in San Gabriel, California, David developed a passion for the natural world during childhood camping trips with his family. He and his twin brother, Dennis Brest, spent countless hours exploring the great outdoors, fostering a bond that would last a lifetime. David pursued his academic interests in forestry at the University of Oregon before earning a PhD in Biology from UCLA. His academic achievements sparked a friendly rivalry with his brother, a loyal supporter of USC.

For over three decades, David taught in the Biology Department at California State University, Dominguez Hills, until his retirement in 2003. His passion for teaching was evident in his unique and engaging style; it was not uncommon for him to share his famous lecture on photosynthesis during family gatherings.

David’s relationship with Patricia began at CSUDH, where her admiration for his intellect, humor, and support blossomed into a lifelong partnership. The couple married in June 1987, creating a family filled with love and shared experiences.

A dedicated family man, David was known for his loyalty and love for both people and pets. His calm demeanor was a source of comfort to those around him, whether he was solving a challenging sudoku puzzle or mediating a difficult conversation. Family camping trips to destinations such as Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Pismo Beach, and Sequoia National Park created lasting memories that his loved ones will cherish.

David is survived by his wife, Patricia, and stepchildren, Gayle Heifetz, Shelley Merrill, and Fred (Cris) Pabst. He leaves behind grandchildren Kai and Alex Heifetz, Allie and Connor Merrill, Casey and Jay Pabst, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. His ashes will be scattered in a sequoia grove beside the meadow where he and Patricia exchanged vows.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Jean and Herbert Brest, his oldest brother Loren Brest, and his twin brother, Dennis. His passing leaves a significant void in the hearts of all who knew him. David Ellis Brest will be deeply missed, remembered for his unwavering love, intellect, and the joy he brought to his family and students alike.
