A new biography detailing the life of prominent industrialist Frederick L. Maytag has been published by local historian Dr. Tom Hoover. The book, titled *Maytag Memories*, spans 292 pages and offers a comprehensive look at Maytag’s contributions to the community and the industry. Among the highlights are personal anecdotes and historical context surrounding his legacy, as well as insights into his close relationship with inventive genius Howard Snyder.

Frederick L. Maytag is perhaps best known today for the beautiful 40-acre Maytag Park, formerly the Jasper County Fairgrounds. This area was purchased by Maytag in 1935 after the fair relocated to Colfax. Hoover’s biography dedicates ten pages to the park’s history, featuring a photograph from September 1935 showcasing Ronald “Dutch” Reagan as Master of Ceremonies at a notable event. Over 100 workers spent more than a year transforming the site into a well-fenced park, which includes the iconic Maytag Bowl.

Additionally, the book sheds light on the historical significance of the $15 million reconditioned Maytag Hotel, built in 1926. After a long marriage of 43 years, Maytag took over the entire fifth floor as his private residence following his separation from his wife, Conredena “Dena” Maytag. Dena continued to live in their spacious mansion in Elm Park for the rest of her life, providing an intriguing glimpse into the personal life of the Maytag family.

Hoover’s work also highlights the Maytag family’s philanthropic contributions to the community, such as the $250,000 YMCA building dedicated in 1927 and the $180,000 Salvation Army Citadel established in 1928. While newer facilities have been built for both organizations in recent years, the historical impact of these contributions remains significant.

The book further notes that Maytag employees benefited from above-average wages and some of the first insurance plans in the nation. In the 1920s, a special surprise gift of $500 was awarded to every employee with three years of service or more, a gesture fondly remembered by local families. For example, Harry Rosenberger, who helped lay bricks for the Maytag Hotel, vividly recalled the grand dedication on December 26, 1926.

Dr. Hoover’s biography, titled *Farm Fields to Beverly Hills*, is filled with historical photographs and engaging narratives that bring Maytag’s legacy to life. Local residents and history enthusiasts are encouraged to check out this insightful work from their local library for a deeper understanding of Maytag’s impact on the community and the broader industrial landscape.
