Users Misunderstand Google’s NotebookLM, Not a Note-Taking App
Google’s NotebookLM has gained attention for its versatility, serving various roles from a research assistant to a fitness coach. Despite its name suggesting a focus on note-taking, many users are misinterpreting its primary purpose. It is crucial to clarify that NotebookLM is not designed to function as a traditional note-taking app.
At its essence, NotebookLM operates as an AI research tool and thinking partner. It does not provide users with a blank slate for jotting down ideas like conventional note-taking applications. Instead, it requires users to upload their own sources and materials to derive insights and create structured outputs such as reports and mind maps.
Understanding NotebookLM’s Functionality
Unlike typical note-taking apps that are built around capturing thoughts and organizing ideas, NotebookLM waits for users to provide information before it can assist. When users upload content, the tool can transform this information into various formats, including podcasts or organized reports. This process highlights the tool’s role as an enhancer of existing information rather than a repository for initial thoughts.
The first step when using NotebookLM involves gathering materials outside the app. Once this data is uploaded, users can leverage its capabilities to explore and synthesize their research. For example, a user might compile lecture notes or articles and input them into NotebookLM to create summaries or visual representations.
However, NotebookLM lacks essential features that make traditional note-taking applications effective. Users often appreciate the organizational systems found in these apps, such as folders, tags, and notebooks. Unfortunately, NotebookLM provides limited organization. The only means of categorization is through notebooks, which function more like containers than structured filing systems. Users must manually decide how to organize their sources, leading to potential confusion and inefficiency.
Challenges with Organization and Usability
As noted in a previous article published in April 2023, the absence of a robust organizational framework in NotebookLM can hinder productivity. Users can create a maximum of six notebooks for their courses but must manually track related topics that do not fit neatly within these categories. This can quickly become cumbersome, especially when juggling multiple subjects.
While it is technically possible to use NotebookLM for note-taking, it requires a significant adjustment from traditional methods. Users might find themselves creating separate notebooks for each course and uploading lecture materials, which can feel disjointed compared to using a dedicated note-taking app. Although NotebookLM offers a notes feature that allows for basic formatting, it does not provide advanced organizational capabilities.
Those looking to streamline their workflow can potentially benefit from integrating NotebookLM with other note-taking applications such as Notion, Evernote, or Apple Notes. This hybrid approach allows users to capture ideas and notes in a familiar environment while still utilizing NotebookLM’s unique features for deeper research.
In summary, while NotebookLM offers innovative tools for processing and engaging with information, it should not be mistaken for a conventional note-taking app. Users seeking a seamless note-taking experience may find more success with specialized applications designed for that purpose. For those interested in pairing NotebookLM with traditional notes, resources are available on platforms like XDA to enhance the overall experience.
