The Avon Eagles secured their second consecutive Division II regional title after a gripping five-set match against the Wadsworth Grizzlies on November 1, 2023. The final scores were 25-14, 22-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-11, showcasing a fierce competition between two one-loss teams. With this victory, the Eagles improved their record to 25-1 and will advance to face Magnificat in the Division II state semifinal on November 8 at Wittenberg University.

Match Highlights and Player Performances

The opening set saw Avon dominate, winning decisively at 25-14. However, the match quickly intensified as Wadsworth responded with a 9-2 lead in the second set. Avon senior Londyn Stone noted the importance of establishing momentum early, saying, “The first set is how we’re going to set the tone.” From that point, both teams engaged in a fierce battle for every point.

The third set ended in favor of the Eagles, 25-22, but Wadsworth bounced back, narrowly taking the fourth set 25-23. This series of tightly contested sets exemplified the high stakes involved in the match. Senior Lily Hamilton highlighted the team’s resilience, stating, “Our coach tells us all the time we have a lot of experience in adversity and going five sets.” The Eagles showed their confidence heading into the decisive fifth set.

Avon surged to a 4-1 lead in the final set, thanks to strong plays from Bethany Sherwood. Although Wadsworth managed to tie the score at 4-4, Avon regained the lead with a crucial kill from Stone. Ultimately, the Eagles’ serving and receiving skills proved pivotal, as they recorded 10 service aces while Wadsworth struggled with double-digit serving errors.

Key Contributions and Team Depth

Stone led the Eagles offensively with 21 kills, followed closely by Hamilton with 20 kills and Sherwood contributing 17 kills. On the opposing side, Wadsworth’s Lauren Decker stood out with a match-high 29 kills, demonstrating her significant impact on the game. Avon coach Kara Coffman acknowledged Wadsworth’s strength, particularly noting Decker’s performance, but credited her team’s depth for the victory.

“Our depth is so amazing; it doesn’t really matter what rotation we’re in,” said Coffman, emphasizing the advantage of having multiple strong players available.

The match concluded with a final kill from Stone, sparking celebrations among the Eagles and solidifying their place in the upcoming semifinal. The team’s experience and determination were evident, as they refused to let their season end prematurely. Stone encapsulated the team’s mindset, stating, “When we were on that court today, we were like, ‘We’re not ending on this.'”

Avon’s victory underscores their resilience and capability, setting the stage for an exciting clash against Magnificat in the next round of the tournament.
