Bend’s Locavore Empowers Local Farmers and Shoppers Alike
On November 18, 2025, Locavore in Bend, Oregon, continues its mission to connect local farmers with consumers, offering fresh produce, meats, and craft items. Founded by nurse Nicolle Timm-Branch 16 years ago, the nonprofit operates with a unique model aimed at promoting healthier eating while supporting the local agricultural community.
Timm-Branch’s vision stemmed from witnessing the adverse effects of poor diets on her patients. She recognized a need for a market that prioritizes locally sourced foods free from high fructose corn syrup, chemicals, and dyes. “Every membership is a vote toward a more robust local food system and a statement that one is willing to put their money where their mouth is,” Timm-Branch explained.
Supporting Local Economy and Farmers
Locavore not only focuses on health but also aims to enhance the local economy. According to the organization, for every dollar spent on locally produced food, **76 cents** remains in the local economy. In contrast, conventional grocery stores retain only **28 cents**. This local spending helps sustain farmers and fosters food security, ensuring that local growers can thrive and new ones can enter the market.
Recent collaborations illustrate Locavore’s critical role in supporting local farmers. Jeremy Fox, manager of Fields Farm, recently faced a surplus of raspberries after the summer farmers markets concluded. Locavore stepped in, purchasing the excess stock and making it available to local shoppers. “Locavore provides great support to farmers as they buy from us directly and give us a fair price,” Fox stated. At Locavore, farmers receive **65 cents** for every dollar sold, compared to just **19 cents** at typical grocery stores.
By sourcing directly from farmers, Locavore ensures that consumers enjoy fresh food that not only tastes better but also lasts longer. The store’s approach to selling food directly from local growers creates a community atmosphere reminiscent of a farmers market.
Membership and Future Growth
Locavore has seen remarkable growth since its inception. In **2023**, the organization reported **$2.34 million** in revenue against **$2.33 million** in expenses, according to IRS records. The primary revenue source is sales, supplemented by member contributions. Memberships, which range from **$75** to **$500** annually, play a crucial role in sustaining the nonprofit.
When Locavore first opened in **2009**, it had only **20 members** and worked with six farmers. Today, it boasts **1,200 members**, highlighting a growing interest in local food options. Board member Amanda Bedell-Comstock emphasized that membership facilitates connections between farmers and consumers, ultimately promoting local food production. “What we are here to do is to sell local food from local producers,” she said.
Locavore’s current location has reached its capacity for fresh produce and products, prompting discussions about future expansion. The board is considering new satellite locations in Bend, and possibly in nearby Sisters and Redmond, to better serve its growing membership base. “That’s our growth opportunity,” Bedell-Comstock noted, while emphasizing the planning stages of this initiative.
As Locavore continues to thrive, it remains committed to its foundational mission: fostering a community centered around healthy, locally sourced food while supporting the farmers who grow it. Through its innovative approach, Locavore embodies the spirit of localism, aiming to make a significant impact on both the health of individuals and the vitality of the local economy.
