In a thrilling contest on November 26, 2023, the Denver Broncos edged out the Washington Commanders 27-26 in overtime, with defensive standout Nik Bonitto making a crucial play to secure the victory. After the Commanders tied the game in regulation, Bonitto’s timely intervention on a two-point conversion attempt proved decisive.

The game unfolded dramatically, with the Commanders responding to a Broncos touchdown drive in overtime by executing an 11-play, 65-yard drive, culminating in a 3-yard touchdown pass from Marcus Mariota to wide receiver Terry McLaurin on fourth-and-3. This set the stage for a tense two-point conversion attempt, where the Broncos made a critical adjustment during a timeout.

As the Commanders prepared for the pivotal play, Broncos head coach Sean Payton called a timeout, allowing defensive coordinator Vance Joseph to modify the defensive strategy. Payton described this moment as a “Kodak situation” where the team could regroup and reassess their approach. “The challenge in those plays are designed QB runs, which we were concerned with,” Payton explained, emphasizing the importance of the defensive switch.

Bonitto, positioned wide to the right of the Commanders’ offensive line, took advantage of the situation after the timeout. As Mariota released the ball, Bonitto leaped and swatted the pass away, a remarkable feat considering he has been playing with a cast on his right hand since Week 3. His quick decision-making and athleticism thwarted what could have been the game-winning play for Washington.

Mariota acknowledged Bonitto’s impact, saying, “I knew I had to try to get some depth and give our guy a chance. He made a play on it and that’s the way it goes.” The defensive stop not only secured the Broncos’ victory but also extended their winning streak to nine games, the longest for the franchise since their eleven-game streak to close the 2012 regular season.

Earlier in the game, the Broncos thought they had sealed the win on a fourth-and-6 from their own 41-yard line when safety Brandon Jones intercepted a pass. Unfortunately for Denver, a pass interference penalty against safety Talanoa Hufanga nullified the play, leaving Payton to reflect on an unusual moment. “It’s the first time for me in I don’t know how many years as a head coach where I took off the quarterback to helmet radio,” he noted.

The Broncos have now played six games this season that were decided on the final play, achieving a commendable 4-2 record in those high-stakes situations. As they continue their season, the team’s resilience and adaptability under pressure will be key as they aim for playoff contention.
