The Vancouver Canucks have introduced a new Diwali-themed jersey, designed by Surrey-based artist Suki Kaur, to celebrate the festival of lights this holiday season. The jersey features a vibrant design incorporating a flame, a peacock, the night sky, and traditional phulkari patterns. This marks the fifth consecutive year the Canucks have released merchandise to honor Diwali, reflecting the team’s commitment to cultural inclusivity.

Kaur expressed her intentions behind the design, stating, “The phulkari is special to me, because it’s such an integral part of Punjabi fashion, but I didn’t want it to speak just to Punjabis, because Diwali is not just about Punjabi people. You see variations in every culture.” Her focus on broad representation aims to connect fans from diverse backgrounds as they celebrate the holiday.

Fans have shown enthusiasm for the new jersey, which is priced at $750. While there are more affordable options, such as hats, hoodies, and pucks featuring the new logo, the jersey’s high cost has drawn mixed reactions. Canucks supporter Austin Taylor remarked, “It’s a nice design, I mean, for the price it’s terrible. $750 for a jersey is kind of crippling. A jersey of that price better come with front row seats and a dinner if you’re gonna pay that much.”

As Diwali approaches, anticipation builds among fans. Arjan Attwal, another Canucks fan, noted, “I’m going to the Diwali game, so it’s gonna be cool to see it in person.” This excitement reflects the growing interest in the cultural significance of the event, especially within the local community.

The Canucks are set to host Diwali night on November 1, 2023, in Abbotsford, followed by a celebration at Rogers Arena in Vancouver on November 5, 2023.
