The Carson High School girls basketball team faced a challenging match against Statesville on March 11, 2024, suffering a defeat with a final score of 41-27. The game, held in China Grove, showcased a stark contrast in offensive performance between both teams, particularly during the second quarter.

Initial momentum saw the score tied at 8 after the first quarter. However, Statesville surged ahead with a commanding 15-4 advantage in the second quarter, a lead that proved crucial as the game progressed. Carson’s head coach, Chloe Monroe, acknowledged the team’s defensive efforts but expressed disappointment in their scoring ability. “We played good defense,” Monroe stated. “We just couldn’t buy a basket — again.”

Carson’s record now stands at 0-2, while Statesville improves to 2-1. The Cougars struggled to find their offensive rhythm throughout the game, with only two players reaching double digits. Rylee Hedrick led Carson with 11 points, including three successful three-pointers. Audrey Faggart contributed eight points, but the rest of the team combined for just eight points.

In contrast, Statesville exhibited a more balanced scoring approach. Ava Waugh topped the Greyhounds’ score sheet with 11 points, while Symerria Harris, a notable 6-foot center, added 10 points. The team’s scoring was rounded out by contributions from other players including Graham with seven points and McCall, Allison, and Ward with a combined total of 11 points.

The game statistics reflect a challenging night for Carson, with their scoring output limited to single digits in three of the four quarters. The final quarter saw Carson score just nine points, while Statesville maintained their composure, adding another nine to secure their victory.

Looking ahead, Carson will aim to regroup and find their offensive strategy as they prepare for their next matchup. The Cougars will need to build on their defensive strengths while enhancing their scoring capabilities to turn their season around.

As the girls’ basketball season progresses, both teams will continue to develop and refine their skills, making for an exciting landscape in local high school sports.
