CU Buffs End Season 3-9, Deion Sanders Faces Coaching Challenges
The University of Colorado Buffaloes concluded their season with a disappointing record of 3-9 after suffering a 24-14 defeat against Kansas State. The performance highlighted the urgent need for a reevaluation of the coaching staff under Deion Sanders, who is facing increasing scrutiny as head coach. The Buffs’ struggles in close games illustrate a pressing requirement for better game management, not only at the quarterback position but also from the sidelines.
Throughout the season, the Buffs have experienced difficulties, particularly in games decided by fewer than ten points. Under Sanders, they hold a record of 6-10 in such contests, with a concerning 1-5 record when his son, Shedeur Sanders, is not playing as the starting quarterback. This season, the team has managed just one victory in games where Shedeur was sidelined, raising questions about the effectiveness of the coaching strategy.
The Big 12 Conference is known for its competitive nature, where teams often find themselves in tightly contested matchups. Colorado’s recent history reflects this reality; they have finished with a 1-8 conference record in two of the past three seasons. The Buffs were in four one-score games this year but fell short in three, indicating a growing pattern of missed opportunities and mounting pressure.
In the recent game against Kansas State, the Buffs appeared to have a plan that focused on utilizing quarterback Kaidon Salter effectively, especially considering the harsh weather conditions. The initial strategy involved running plays, but in the fourth quarter, with the score at 10-7 in favor of Kansas State, the Buffs shifted to a more balanced approach, throwing the ball nine times and running it eight. Kansas State, on the other hand, capitalized on their opportunities with a strong ground game, effectively controlling the clock and the game dynamics.
Despite the challenges, some players have shown promise. Junior wide receiver Omarion Miller stood out in the game against Kansas State, recording seven catches for 120 yards. His performance suggests that he could play a significant role in the team’s evolution moving forward. As the Buffs prepare for the 2026 season, developing young talent will be crucial.
Following the game, Sanders expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s performance and the coaching decisions made during critical moments. With two timeouts remaining in the final minute, Sanders chose not to utilize them, indicating a sense of resignation as the game slipped away. His demeanor reflected the frustration not just of a coach but of a leader who is aware that significant changes are necessary for future success.
Looking ahead, the Buffs are set to recruit Julian Lewis, a highly regarded five-star quarterback prospect. The ability to develop this talent will be vital for Sanders as he seeks to turn the program around. While the potential for success exists, the current coaching setup must adapt to ensure the team can compete effectively in the Big 12.
As the off-season approaches, Colorado will engage in introspective evaluations and discussions regarding the direction of its football program. The upcoming months will be pivotal for Sanders as he contemplates the changes needed to enhance the competitiveness of the CU Buffs. The next chapter in this journey will be critical in shaping his legacy as head coach.
