Denver Broncos Sign Veteran Tight End Marcedes Lewis to Practice Squad
The Denver Broncos have bolstered their tight end position by signing veteran player Marcedes Lewis to their practice squad. The announcement came early on Wednesday, following Lewis’s workout with the team the previous day. At 41 years old, Lewis brings extensive experience, marking his entry into a remarkable 20th season in the NFL.
Lewis was originally selected as the 28th overall pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2006 NFL Draft. This year holds significance not only for Lewis but also for the Broncos, as it aligns with the timeframe when the team drafted quarterback Jay Cutler in 2006, who played his last game in 2017. Notably, Sean Payton, now head coach of the Broncos, was embarking on his first season as head coach for the New Orleans Saints during that same draft.
The Broncos’ decision to sign Lewis comes as the team faces challenges due to injuries at the tight end position. Lucas Krull suffered a fractured foot earlier this season and has since been placed on injured reserve. Furthermore, tight end Nate Adkins exited last Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys with a knee injury, adding to the team’s depth concerns. Adkins has been versatile, often serving as a fullback and H-back, making the need for a reliable tight end even more critical.
Currently, Lewis joins a tight end group that includes only two healthy players on the active roster: Evan Engram and Adam Trautman. The Broncos also have two other tight ends on their practice squad: Patrick Murtagh, an international pathway player from Australia, and Caleb Lohner, a seventh-round draft pick from April who has transitioned from a basketball background to football.
Given the team’s situation, Lewis could be elevated to the active roster for the upcoming game against the Houston Texans, scheduled for Sunday. Last season, while playing for the Chicago Bears, Lewis participated in 17 games, starting four, and recorded one reception. He contributed to the Bears’ offense by participating in 19 percent of offensive snaps, along with 52 snaps on special teams.
The signing of Lewis not only addresses immediate needs but also introduces a seasoned player known for his exceptional blocking skills. As the Broncos prepare for their next matchup, his experience may prove invaluable in helping to stabilize the tight end position and enhance the overall performance of the team.
