Mater Dei Tops Orange County Girls Volleyball Rankings Ahead of Playoffs
The Mater Dei Monarchs have secured the top position in the Orange County girls volleyball rankings as they head into the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section (CIF-SS) playoffs. With an impressive record of 28-4 and a perfect 6-0 run in the Trinity League, Mater Dei is poised to make a strong playoff push as they enter the tournament as the third seed in the Division 1 bracket.
League Champions Prepare for CIF-SS Showdown
Following closely behind, Los Alamitos finished their season with a 27-8 record, dominating the Sunset League with a flawless 12-0 campaign. The Griffins will face San Juan Hills, the South Coast League champions, in the playoffs’ first round on October 25, 2023. San Juan Hills, boasting a 20-5 overall record and an undefeated 8-0 league run, will host the match.
Another strong contender, Newport Harbor, concluded their season with a 25-8 record, finishing second in the Sunset League with a 10-2 mark. The Sailors will take on Mira Costa in their first playoff match, also scheduled for Wednesday.
The Crean Lutheran Saints are making their playoff debut with a 24-2 record after winning the Freeway League with a 7-1 record. They will also play on Wednesday against Harvard-Westlake in Division 1.
Other Teams to Watch in the Playoffs
In Division 2, San Clemente and Santa Margarita will also be looking to make their mark. San Clemente, with a strong 24-10 record, achieved an 8-0 finish in the Sea View League and will host Louisville in their first round. Santa Margarita, concluding their season at 20-10, finished second in the Trinity League and will play Los Osos at home.
The JSerra Lions secured an at-large berth in the Division 2 playoffs, finishing third in the Trinity League with a 16-14 record. They will face Windward at home on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Orange Lutheran qualified for the playoffs despite a challenging 0-6 record in the Trinity League and will host Sunny Hills, who tied for the Crestview League championship with a 6-2 record, in the first round.
As the playoffs approach, these teams are prepared to showcase their skills and compete for the CIF-SS title. The upcoming matches promise exciting action and intense competition among the top high school volleyball programs in Orange County.
