Michigan’s Semaj Morgan Faces Criticism but Gains Team Support
ANN ARBOR — Michigan Wolverines receiver and punt returner Semaj Morgan has faced significant criticism this season due to dropped passes and questionable decisions on punt returns. This scrutiny intensified following the Wolverines’ recent victory against Michigan State, where Morgan’s performance drew particular attention.
In the match on October 21, 2023, Morgan recorded just two yards on two returns. He opted to run laterally when a straightforward advance would have gained yardage, and he made a fair catch at the 5-yard line instead of allowing the ball to potentially roll into the end zone. Additionally, he dropped a pass from quarterback Bryce Underwood and collided with running back Justice Haynes, resulting in an injury. Despite these struggles, Michigan left East Lansing with a 31-20 victory and now prepares to face Purdue at Michigan Stadium this week.
Head coach Sherrone Moore expressed confidence in Morgan’s abilities, noting that he practices well during the week. “There’s always competition in the return game, and no one is bailing on Morgan,” he stated. Receivers coach Ron Bellamy emphasized the importance of focusing on performance rather than external criticism. “You can’t worry about what the outside forces say,” he remarked, highlighting Morgan’s commitment to improvement.
Morgan currently ranks third in receiving for the Wolverines, accumulating 214 yards on 19 catches, along with one touchdown. Although he has dropped a total of six passes this season, his potential remains evident. Bellamy noted that Morgan consistently trains hard, using the JUGS machine and working closely with Underwood to boost his confidence.
The impact of social media criticism on players cannot be overstated. Jordan Marshall, another member of the Wolverines, acknowledged that everyone sees the negative comments but advised against letting them affect performance. “You either can take it as motivation or you can hang your head on it,” he said. Marshall believes in Morgan’s capabilities, stating, “He’s a great player.”
Morgan’s accolades include being a two-time All-Big Ten selection as a return specialist, gaining honorable mention from coaches in 2023 and 2024, as well as from media in 2023. His potential in the return game has not fully materialized this season, leading to discussions about the team’s overall strategy.
Moore pointed out that the return game is a collective effort. He emphasized the need for both the returner and the blocking unit to work in harmony. “The fair catch at the 5, he’s just got to be better there,” he remarked, stressing the importance of decision-making.
While Morgan has faced challenges, he has also shown flashes of brilliance. He achieved a career-high of 69 yards on four receptions against Central Michigan, including a 32-yard touchdown catch from Underwood. Although he did not record any receptions in the Michigan State game, his potential remains a focal point for the coaching staff.
Moore reiterated that the team’s approach to Morgan is one of support and challenge. “He practices at a high level, practices hard, and practices with energy,” he said. Marshall reinforced the belief within the team, stating, “There’s no trust lost because he dropped a ball… He’s going to have to make a big play for us at some point this year.”
As the Wolverines prepare for their upcoming game against Purdue, the team’s commitment to supporting Semaj Morgan remains strong. The hope is that he will channel the challenges he has faced into future successes on the field, earning back the trust and admiration of fans and teammates alike.
