North Carolina Tar Heels Dominate December with Stout Defense
The North Carolina Tar Heels have established a formidable defensive identity throughout December, maintaining an undefeated record in six games. With one match remaining in the month, the Tar Heels are set to face the Florida State Seminoles on December 30, 2023, at the Dean E. Smith Center.
Throughout the month, North Carolina has not allowed its opponents to exceed 70 points in any game, a key factor in their success. This defensive consistency has played a critical role in their impressive six-game winning streak.
Defensive Highlights Against Top Teams
One of the standout performances came during an away game against the Kentucky Wildcats, who were averaging over 88 points per game prior to the matchup. The Tar Heels managed to stifle Kentucky, holding them to just 64 points, while restricting their shooting to a 43.4 percent field goal percentage and a mere 7.7 percent from three-point range. These figures marked Kentucky’s lowest outputs of the season.
Following the 67-64 victory over Kentucky, head coach Hubert Davis emphasized the importance of defense in his team’s success. During December, North Carolina has averaged 61 points allowed per game, including a noteworthy performance against the Ohio State Buckeyes, where they limited their opponents to 70 points. Ohio State entered that game having scored at least 82 points in their previous three contests.
The Tar Heels’ defensive strategy has effectively neutralized key players. In the matchup against Ohio State, they limited guard Bruce Thornton to just 16 points, significantly below his season average of 21.1 points per game. Thornton struggled offensively, shooting 7-of-16 from the field and failing to connect on any of his four attempts from beyond the arc.
Looking Ahead
As the Tar Heels prepare for their ACC opener against Florida State, the emphasis on defense remains paramount. With players like Veesaar and Wilson anchoring the frontcourt, the team is positioned to continue its strong defensive performance throughout the season.
The upcoming match on December 30 will be crucial as North Carolina seeks to extend its winning streak and solidify its standing in the conference. Fans are eager to see if the Tar Heels can maintain their defensive intensity against their conference rival.
