Ohio High School Girls Wrestling Stars Shine at Championships
Ohio high school girls wrestling is experiencing a remarkable surge, with several athletes achieving significant milestones at both state and national levels. This winter, the sport’s growth is exemplified by standout performances at the 2024 OHSAA state wrestling championships, where competitors like Kayla Moroschan, Deionna Borders, and Ashlynn Brokaw showcased their talents.
Notable Achievements at State Championships
At the recent state championships, Chippewa’s Kayla Moroschan claimed victory in the girls’ 120-pound class, defeating Anna Madi from Brecksville. Moroschan’s win reflects her commitment to the sport, as she looks to build on her impressive record of 93-7.
Another standout, Deionna Borders, has emerged as a formidable competitor in the heavyweight category. After placing seventh in her debut state tournament, she rebounded to earn third place as a sophomore and finally clinched the title last season with an unblemished record of 47-0. Borders also triumphed at the Fargo Junior 235-pound championships in July, further solidifying her status among the nation’s elite.
Ashlynn Brokaw has also made headlines by winning the 105-pound state title last season, following her third-place finish in her freshman year. With an overall record of 88-8, she continues to demonstrate her prowess on the mat.
Emerging and Established Talents
Mackenzie Carder has become a prominent figure in Ohio wrestling, consistently competing at a high level. Despite her challenges in the same weight class as two-time champion Talea Guntrum, Carder has maintained strong performances, placing second at both the Fargo Junior Nationals and Super 32 events.
Freshman Carolyn Geckler also made headlines by winning the state championship at 115 pounds, becoming Perry High School’s first girl to achieve this feat with a final record of 41-2. Her journey included victories at the Women of Ironman in December and a title at the 16U 120 division in Fargo, showcasing her promising future.
Other notable contenders include Jada Weiss, who narrowly defeated Lauren Carlisle in the 155-pound state final, and Bella Graziani, who has shown resilience despite facing tough competition from established rivals.
As the season progresses, many of these talented athletes will continue to compete, with their eyes set on upcoming tournaments and the opportunity to represent their schools and state on larger stages.
