The PCM Mustangs’ remarkable volleyball season concluded unexpectedly on March 15, 2024, as they faced the Williamsburg Raiders in the Class 3A Region 5 quarterfinals. The Mustangs, who had aimed for a strong postseason performance, lost in straight sets, with scores of 25-16, 25-17, and 25-11. This defeat marked the first time the teams had met since 2016, and it extended Williamsburg’s winning streak to four matches against PCM since 2014.

Despite the loss, the Mustangs showcased individual talents throughout the match. Libby Winters led the team with nine kills, alongside 11 digs, two assists, and three aces. Tori Lindsay contributed significantly with 11 assists, three kills, and six digs. Other notable performances included Addi Hudnut with four assists and eight digs, Jorja Teeter who added seven digs, and Peyton Lathrum with four kills. The team struggled with serving, missing 12 serves out of 45 attempts but managed to record six aces during the match.

The defeat ended PCM’s season with an impressive record of 23 wins and six losses, the best performance since they set a school record with 25 victories in 2005. The Mustangs had high hopes for the postseason, but their journey came to an abrupt halt against a well-prepared Williamsburg team.

Following their victory, the Williamsburg Raiders went on to face Roland-Story, ranked 10th in Class 3A, in the regional semifinals. The Raiders’ season ended with a loss in that match, but they will still be remembered for their strong performance against PCM and their journey through the season.

The PCM Mustangs’ early exit from the playoffs serves as a bittersweet conclusion to a season filled with promise and hard-fought victories. As the team reflects on their accomplishments, they will undoubtedly look to build on this success in the coming year.
