The team’s success can be attributed not only to standout performances from players such as Azzi Fudd and Sarah Strong, but also to the relentless aggression of freshman forward Blanca Quiñonez, who played a crucial role in the win.

Quiñonez contributed significantly during her 21 minutes on the court, scoring 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting, including a three-pointer. Her impact extended beyond scoring, as she recorded four rebounds, five assists, and four steals. This aggressive play helped UConn capitalize on Iowa’s mistakes, leading to an impressive 41 points off turnovers.

Geno Auriemma Highlights Quiñonez’s Unique Journey

Head coach Geno Auriemma spoke about Quiñonez’s competitive spirit, attributing it to her extensive basketball experience. “Blanca, well, I’m always angry with her, so maybe that’s why…she has played so much basketball that she takes it very seriously,” Auriemma said. He drew parallels between her background and that of junior hockey players who leave home at young ages to pursue their careers. “You grow up fast in that situation, and you develop a sense of urgency and purpose,” he added.

Quiñonez’s journey began in Ecuador, where she represented her country in various age levels, including U15 and U16 competitions. By 2020, she was playing professionally in Italy’s Serie A1, averaging 11.0 points and 3.5 rebounds. Her international experience has shaped her perspective on the game, allowing her to transition seamlessly to the collegiate level.

Against Iowa, Quiñonez not only displayed her scoring ability but also her defensive skills. UConn scored 40 points in the paint and added 14 second-chance points, with Quiñonez instrumental in maintaining this offensive pressure. Auriemma remarked, “She didn’t come here just because moving from Campobasso, Italy, to Storrs was a step up… It really is a beautiful town,” recognizing the effort it takes to adjust to a new environment.

Teammate Azzi Fudd echoed Auriemma’s sentiments, noting Quiñonez’s professional background as a key factor in her performance. “The way she plays, you can tell that she’s been playing pro basketball overseas,” Fudd said. She followed this with another solid performance against Marquette, scoring 12 points on 5-for-10 shooting and contributing a steal and a block in UConn’s 89-53 win. Her standout moment came during the Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase against Utah, where she scored 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting in just 18 minutes.
