UND’s Josh Zakreski Undergoes Successful Surgery After Injury
University of North Dakota (UND) forward Josh Zakreski underwent successful surgery on March 12, 2024, following a lower-body injury sustained during practice. The injury occurred last Thursday, causing the Fighting Hawks coaching staff to anticipate a recovery period of several months for the promising freshman.
Coach’s Perspective on Zakreski’s Recovery
Head coach Dane Jackson expressed confidence in Zakreski’s rehabilitation process, emphasizing the player’s work ethic and positive attitude. “Obviously, we’re all pulling for him,” Jackson stated. “He’s going to have a lengthy rehab, but we know he’ll work hard at it. It’s going to be a while, but he’s going to have a good attitude and he’ll have all the best care.”
Zakreski had made an impressive start to his collegiate career, scoring a goal and contributing three points over six games, while maintaining a plus-3 rating. His performance had earned him a spot on the right wing alongside teammate Ellis Rickwood during a recent series against Clarkson.
Impact on Team Dynamics
With Zakreski sidelined, the Fighting Hawks adjusted their lineup for the home series against Minnesota Duluth. Freshman forward Jack Kernan stepped into Zakreski’s position on Rickwood’s line. Kernan made a significant impact, assisting on a pivotal goal in Friday night’s close 4-3 overtime loss to the Bulldogs. The team rebounded with a decisive victory, winning the series finale 5-1 on Saturday.
Jackson praised Kernan’s performance, noting, “I thought his pace was really good. He was driving the net and had some great backchecks, along with excellent pressure on forechecks. He played a lot more direct and inside, which was a real positive for us.” This adaptability showcases the depth of the Fighting Hawks roster as they navigate Zakreski’s absence.
Looking ahead, the Fighting Hawks are set to face Omaha in a two-game series at Baxter Arena this weekend. The matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday, with updates available through local radio and online streaming platforms.
As the team rallies around their injured teammate, the focus remains on maintaining momentum in the season. Zakreski’s recovery will be closely monitored as he aims to return to the ice stronger than ever.
