Vanderbilt Men’s Tennis Ends Fall Season at NCAA Singles Championships
The fall season for Vanderbilt University men’s tennis concluded on Tuesday at the NCAA Singles Championships, as No. 84 Pablo Martinez Gomez faced off against No. 66 Matthew Forbes from Michigan State. The match, part of the Round of 64, showcased a thrilling contest that captivated fans and highlighted the competitive spirit of collegiate tennis.
From the outset, Martinez Gomez and Forbes engaged in a tightly contested battle. They split the first six points of the opening set, establishing a 3-3 tie. However, Martinez Gomez shifted gears, winning the next three points to claim the first set 6-3. The intensity continued into the second set, which culminated in a 6-6 tie. This forced a tiebreaker, where Forbes leveled the match with a 7-3 victory in the tiebreak, winning the set 7-6.
The final set mirrored the competitive exchanges of the previous sets. Martinez Gomez initially took a slight lead at 4-3, but Forbes responded with a determined effort. He rallied to win the set 6-4, ultimately securing the match.
Vanderbilt men’s tennis head coach Scott Brown praised Martinez Gomez for his tenacity and professionalism. “Pablo fought like a lion,” Brown stated. “He represented the black and gold with class. Since he arrived in January, he’s worked his tail off, checked all the boxes, and has been so professional. Most importantly, he’s been an extremely positive influence, not just on his teammates, but on the staff as well.”
