Arlington Seguin Clinches Playoff Spot with Dramatic Fake Punt
UPDATE: Arlington Seguin has secured a thrilling 23-22 victory over Mansfield Summit in a nail-biting “win-or-go-home” showdown, clinching a playoff spot in District 3-5A Division II Thursday night at Vernon Newsom Stadium. The game turned on a crucial fake punt executed by senior Johnaven Polk with just minutes remaining, marking a pivotal moment for the Cougars.
With only three minutes left and a narrow one-point lead, Seguin faced a daunting 4th-and-7 from their own 43-yard line. Polk, who had already showcased his skills as a runner and receiver, threw a clutch 32-yard pass to G’Manii Smith, keeping the drive alive and sealing the game. “I had to do a little of everything and our team is a monster that keeps fighting,” Polk stated after the game.
Seguin’s victory improves their record to 7-3 (5-3 in 3-5A Division II) and marks the school’s ninth playoff appearance in history. They will enter the playoffs as the fourth seed and prepare for a first-round road game. Meanwhile, Mansfield Summit, with a record of 6-4 (5-3), faces disappointment as they miss the playoffs for the second consecutive year.
Head coach Joe Gordon emphasized the importance of the fake punt call, saying, “I didn’t want them to have the ball with that much time left.” The decision proved crucial, as Summit had momentum and was poised to capitalize had they regained possession.
In a game where both teams struggled offensively in the first half, the Cougars made halftime adjustments that turned the tide. They transformed an 8-8 halftime tie into a commanding 23-8 lead with two quick second-half touchdowns. Polk scored on two Wildcat runs, demonstrating both versatility and tenacity.
Summit’s senior quarterback, Ian Gebhardt, emerged as a key player, rushing for 152 yards on 18 carries and leading a late-game rally that saw the Jaguars come within one point after consecutive scoring drives. Gebhardt’s determination was evident, especially after briefly leaving the game due to injury.
As the clock wound down, Summit reached Seguin’s 36-yard line but fell short, ending their hopes for a playoff return. Coach Channon Hall expressed pride in his team’s second-half performance, despite the outcome. “I felt good about the way we were coming back in the second half,” he remarked.
The intense atmosphere at Vernon Newsom Stadium was electrifying, with each play drawing cheers and gasps from the crowd. Both teams faced challenges, including a series of penalties that hindered offensive momentum, as officials called 13 penalties for 140 yards in the first half alone.
With this victory, Arlington Seguin not only avenges last year’s close win against Summit (36-28) but also sets the stage for an exciting playoff run. Fans are eagerly anticipating who their Cougars will face in the first round. As the playoffs approach, the Cougars are primed to continue their fight for victory.
