Boston Distributes 3,200 Turkeys as Thanksgiving Approaches
UPDATE: Boston city officials have just announced the distribution of over 3,200 Thanksgiving turkeys and 35,000 pounds of food to residents in need ahead of the holiday. The initiative, led by Mayor Michelle Wu, reflects a significant community effort to ensure all families can enjoy a warm meal this Thanksgiving.
During a press conference held at the Nuevo Dia adult day health center in Jamaica Plain earlier today, Mayor Wu emphasized the importance of community support, stating, “We’re so thankful to partner every single day to try to do whatever we can to take care of our community members and meet the needs of our residents, but especially around the holidays.”
This year marks the third iteration of the program, which spans three days and involves over 60 distribution sites, including community organizations and churches. City officials collaborated with local businesses such as Stop and Shop, Amazon, and Goya Foods to source the turkeys and food items, which include rice, canned corn, and pasta.
Jennifer Epstein, controlling owner of the Boston Legacy Football Club, attended the announcement, highlighting the club’s commitment to the community. “Ensuring that families have a warm meal on the table is something that matters to all of us,” she remarked.
Residents seeking additional food resources can call 311 or 617-635-4500. A multilingual Thanksgiving resource page is available at vitalcxns.org/food, outlining free events across Boston neighborhoods leading up to the holiday.
City officials are also promoting accessible food programs, including after-school meals and meal delivery for those unable to leave home. The Office of Food Justice provides a comprehensive list of resources at boston.gov/food-resources, ensuring residents can find the support they need during this critical time.
As Thanksgiving approaches, the city remains committed to combating food insecurity and supporting its residents through various initiatives. With a focus on community engagement and support, Boston is stepping up to ensure that no family goes hungry this holiday season.
Stay tuned for more updates as the holiday draws near and remember to check local resources for assistance.
