Cal Faces No. 21 SMU in Must-Win Game After Wilcox Firing
UPDATE: In a highly anticipated matchup, Cal hosts No. 21 SMU today at 5 p.m. in their first game after the shocking firing of longtime coach Justin Wilcox. This critical showdown takes place at Memorial Stadium as both teams aim for significant postseason implications.
The stakes are enormous for SMU, who can clinch a spot in the ACC championship game with a victory. Currently holding an 8-3 record, the Mustangs are riding high with six wins in their last seven games. Conversely, Cal enters at 6-5 overall, reeling from a disappointing end to the season marked by a 31-10 loss to Stanford.
This game marks a new chapter for the Bears under interim coach Nick Rolovich, who expressed openness to remaining on staff beyond this season. Rolovich, who was previously a senior offensive analyst, faces the challenge of rallying a team that has lost a key leader.
Freshman quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele is poised to make history. He currently has 2,787 passing yards and needs just 117 more yards to surpass legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers for the No. 10 spot on Cal’s single-season passing list. This milestone could provide the spark the Bears desperately need.
On the defensive front, senior lineman Aidan Keanaaina has emerged as a standout, leading the team with 49 tackles, a feat not seen since Luc Bequette in 2019. His performance will be critical against a potent SMU offense.
For SMU, quarterback Kevin Jennings has been a force, throwing for 3,113 yards and 24 touchdowns this season. Last year, he torched Cal’s defense for 225 yards and two touchdowns, and he aims to replicate that success today.
Head coach Rhett Lashlee, who recently signed a contract extension through 2032, has built a formidable team that ranks among the best nationally in both interceptions and fumble recoveries. The Mustangs lead the nation with 27 takeaways, highlighting their aggressive defensive strategy.
Key player statistics to watch include Cal’s Jacob De Jesus, who leads the ACC with 87 receptions. He needs just 14 catches over the next two games to break the single-season program record of 100 established by Dameane Douglas in 1998. Meanwhile, cornerback Hezekiah Masses leads the nation with 17 passes defended, showcasing the Bears’ defensive prowess.
The game kicks off shortly, and fans are eager to see if Cal can turn the tide in a turbulent season, while SMU looks to solidify its championship aspirations. Stay tuned for live updates and highlights as the action unfolds!
