Chicago Symphony Orchestra Shines Under Klaus Mäkelä’s Baton
UPDATE: The Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) delivered a stunning performance under music director designate Klaus Mäkelä on Thursday evening, showcasing Hector Berlioz’s iconic Symphonie fantastique during the first of three concerts in the 2025-26 season. This concert marks a critical moment in the orchestra’s evolution as it embraces the youthful energy and vision of the 29-year-old maestro.
As the CSO prepares for Mäkelä’s full tenure starting in September 2027, Thursday’s program provided an early glimpse into the dynamic relationship forming between the conductor and the orchestra. The musicians, who played a pivotal role in his hiring, expressed their enthusiasm through a powerful performance that resonated with the audience, leading to prolonged cheers after each piece.
Mäkelä’s ambitious programming paired Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, a hallmark of orchestral repertoire, with “Harold in Italy,” another remarkable work by the composer. Both pieces, each over 40 minutes long, weave a rich tapestry of emotions and musical storytelling, emphasizing Berlioz’s innovative spirit. This pairing was not just a concert; it was a statement of artistic intent.
The evening began with the first movement of “Harold in Italy,” where renowned violist Antoine Tamestit captivated the audience with his vibrant and nimble playing. Tamestit, who made his CSO debut in September 2024, added a theatrical flair by entering from the back of the orchestra, embodying the spirit of the wandering poet from Lord Byron’s narrative. His performance culminated in an encore of J.S. Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1, leaving the audience in awe.
Mäkelä conducted from memory, a choice that enhanced his connection with the musicians, allowing for a more fluid and engaging performance. The CSO responded with remarkable precision, particularly in the brass section, highlighted by the talents of new principal trombonist Timothy Higgins and returning principal trumpeter Esteban Batallán.
The concert’s intimate moments, such as the duet between the solo violist and guest harpist Emily Levin, showcased Berlioz’s imaginative orchestration. The audience was treated to a vibrant display of skill, including an impressive performance featuring four percussionists on eight timpani during the Symphonie’s climactic moments.
This concert not only marked a new chapter for the CSO under Mäkelä but also engaged the audience on a profound emotional level. The enthusiastic response indicates a promising future for the orchestra as it embraces this new era of creativity and artistry.
As the CSO continues its series of concerts, all eyes will be on Mäkelä’s direction and the evolving sound of this storied ensemble. The next performances are anticipated to further explore the innovative spirit of Berlioz and the dynamic potential of the orchestra, ensuring that the excitement remains palpable in the concert hall.
Stay tuned for more updates as the CSO embarks on this thrilling journey with Klaus Mäkelä at the helm.
