Chicago White Sox Appoint Derek Shomon as Hitting Coach NOW
BREAKING: The Chicago White Sox have just appointed Derek Shomon as their new hitting coach, a role he assumes with immense pride and local ties. Shomon, a 2008 Glenbrook South graduate, expressed his excitement during a videoconference, saying, “It’s super special, man. This has always been home.”
This announcement follows Shomon’s tenure as the assistant hitting coach for the Miami Marlins, where he played a key role in the team finishing sixth in the National League with a .250 batting average in 2025. Shomon joins the White Sox as they aim to revamp their offensive strategies, having seen promising improvements in the latter half of the previous season.
Joel McKeithan will return for his second season as the assistant hitting coach, and Sherman Johnson Jr. has been named the new minor-league hitting coordinator, marking a significant shift in the Sox’s coaching staff. General Manager Chris Getz praised Shomon’s energy and intelligence, highlighting his strong track record and the grit he brings to the position.
Shomon, 35, has a solid background in coaching, having spent four seasons with the Minnesota Twins organization, where he was instrumental in the team ranking third in the American League with 416 home runs. Manager Will Venable emphasized Shomon’s ability to build relationships with players, stating, “Derek has the ability to help people get better and leverage those relationships to help our players be the best version of themselves.”
During his call, Shomon pointed out the similarities between the Sox and the Marlins, particularly their young rosters, which include talented players like shortstop Colson Montgomery and catcher Kyle Teel. He noted, “The major-league team made really big strides… and that’s a massive kudos to the hitting coaches who were here last year and are still here.”
Shomon’s hiring is part of a broader strategy to improve the White Sox’s performance, with the team showing top ten rankings in runs scored per game and walks during the second half of the last season. “This is an offense that has the opportunity to be multifaceted and have multiple solutions,” he said, echoing his belief in the team’s potential.
As Shomon embraces this new chapter, he reflects on the significance of returning to his roots, recalling his childhood memories of cheering for the White Sox. “When I went out to the stadium about a week and a half ago, I had a moment in the dugout… it’s happening. I’m back home,” he shared, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity.
Fans and players alike are eager to see how Shomon will implement his vision and strategies to elevate the White Sox’s game in the upcoming season. With a commitment to hard work and a deep understanding of the team’s dynamics, Shomon is poised to make an immediate impact.
Stay tuned for more updates on the White Sox as they prepare for the upcoming season under new leadership.
