URGENT UPDATE: The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is sounding the alarm as an estimated 82 million Americans prepare to hit the roads for the Thanksgiving holiday. With heavy traffic expected and hazardous weather conditions looming, officials are urging drivers to prioritize safety.

Starting tonight, Fresno, California, faces a Dense Fog Advisory issued by the National Weather Service Hanford. Visibility could plummet to as low as 200 feet due to thick fog, significantly increasing the risk of accidents. “Always turn on your headlights—low beams are essential in fog,” said CHP Officer Anthony Daulton. “Using high beams worsens visibility.”

As millions travel starting from Thanksgiving Eve through Sunday, the CHP’s holiday enforcement period will be in full effect. “Make sure your vehicle is in good standing,” Daulton advised. Mechanics emphasize that regular maintenance can prevent catastrophic breakdowns that could ruin holiday plans.

Local auto technician Brandy Ames from Sunnyside Auto Repair stressed the importance of vehicle upkeep. “The most important thing is to get your car to a trusted auto shop every 5,000 miles. That’s generally twice a year for most drivers,” Ames explained. She highlighted critical checks including engine performance, brake integrity, and fluid levels. “Especially your coolant and oil—if they’re low, you risk overheating, which could lead to a serious breakdown.”

With potential emergencies arising, the CHP reminds travelers that help is just a phone call away. “If you’re on the highway and dial 9-1-1, it connects directly to CHP dispatch,” Officer Daulton confirmed.

In a final note to holiday travelers, Ames offered heartfelt advice: “Say a prayer, hit the road, drive safe, and don’t rush.” As millions set out to celebrate, ensuring a safe journey becomes paramount.
