Community Observers on Alert After Killing of Renee Good in Minneapolis
UPDATE: The tragic killing of Renee Good, a community observer documenting an immigration operation in Minneapolis, has sent shockwaves through North Carolina’s community observation networks. This incident has raised urgent questions about safety protocols and the emotional toll on those dedicated to monitoring federal actions.
Community observers, primarily U.S. citizens, have actively participated in tracking immigration enforcement for years, aiming to protect vulnerable populations. However, Good’s death marks a horrifying escalation in the risks they face. “I feel deeply disturbed and saddened by what happened to Renee Good,” expressed one observer, highlighting the heightened fear among volunteers. “It’s clear that ICE is willing to go to the very end, so we must remain vigilant.”
The impact of Good’s death is profound. Following the incident, Martha Hernández, coordinator of the Radar Safe network, reported receiving multiple messages from concerned observers in North Carolina. Many expressed their commitment to continue their work despite the rising dangers. “The violence ICE uses against our communities is terrifying,” stated another participant, underscoring the urgent need for vigilance.
The Radar Safe Community Alert Network, which operates in Wake and Durham counties, includes 50 trained volunteers who document federal agent activities. Hernández lamented that Good’s killing exposed the inherent risks, stating, “Under this administration, there is nothing that guarantees safety.”
Organizations like Siembra NC are ramping up their efforts to train community observers. In 2025 alone, they trained over 5,000 volunteers through their “Cuidando el Camino” program. Co-director Kelly Morales emphasized, “If that’s what they do when we are there, imagine what they would do when no one is watching.” Morales called Good’s killing a confirmation of a disturbing pattern of impunity among immigration enforcement agencies.
Young observers from the Henderson Fuerza Activa group are particularly shaken. Coordinator Antelmo Salazar noted that their passion for defending their community is now overshadowed by fear: “What’s going to happen if they beat us, insult us, or even kill us?” Their resolve remains strong, yet they grapple with the potential consequences of their commitment.
The Carolina Migrant Network, which has trained over 700 observers in Charlotte, echoed these concerns. Co-executive director Stefania Arteaga remarked, “This confirms that Border Patrol activity is strategic in causing fear and destroying our communities.” The incident has ignited a call to action among citizens who may not have been directly affected by immigration issues before.
Community organizations are now reassessing their protocols and increasing protective measures for observers. Siembra NC plans to enhance training focused on nonviolent observation and collective support, while the Carolina Migrant Network is reviewing safety protocols to ensure volunteers are never alone during operations.
As these community observation networks navigate this crisis, the priority remains clear: ensure the safety and well-being of those committed to observing and documenting immigration enforcement. “This is work that requires courage and love,” one source stated, emphasizing the need for ongoing support.
The tragic death of Renee Good has brought to light the critical importance of community observation programs and the urgent need for accountability from federal agencies. As organizations mobilize to strengthen their efforts, the fight for justice and safety continues in North Carolina and beyond.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as community organizations respond to the challenges ahead.
