Costco Expands Urgent Recall of Kirkland Prosecco Due to Explosions
UPDATE: Costco has just expanded the recall of its Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene due to serious safety concerns, impacting more than 941,400 bottles. Authorities warn that some unopened bottles could spontaneously shatter, posing a significant risk to consumers.
This urgent recall follows an initial announcement in September, where approximately 400,000 bottles were affected. On November 6, 2025, Costco confirmed the alarming expansion, emphasizing that the risk of explosion can occur even without physical handling of the bottles.
The recall specifically targets glass bottles of Kirkland Signature Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG, identifiable by the UPC code 196633883742 and Costco item number 1879870. The product is packaged in a distinctive green bottle with a purple foil top and label.
This hazardous issue has been reported in several states, including Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Consumers in these areas who purchased the prosecco between April 25 and August 26, 2025, are urged to take immediate action.
If you suspect you have one of the affected bottles, do NOT open it. Instead, follow these critical disposal guidelines from Costco:
1. Wrap the unopened bottle in paper towels.
2. Place it inside a thick plastic bag.
3. Dispose of it in your regular household garbage.
DO NOT return the bottle to Costco or attempt an in-store drop-off.
Costco is committed to consumer safety and offers refunds to customers, even without a receipt. To claim your refund, keep your recall notice and take it to your local Costco. If you have discarded the bottle following these safety measures, you are still eligible for a refund.
In case of injury from broken glass or cork, seek medical attention immediately and document the incident for possible claims or safety investigations.
For further assistance, Costco members can contact Ethica Wines at 786-810-7132 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST, Monday through Friday, or email [email protected].
