UPDATE: A 53-year-old man in Shillington, Pennsylvania has been hospitalized after a shocking accident involving his dog. The incident occurred around 11:13 PM, when the man was shot in the back after his dog jumped onto a shotgun left on his bed.

Local authorities have confirmed that police were dispatched to the 300 block of State Street following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers from the Shillington Police Department discovered the man with a gunshot wound and promptly transported him to the hospital for emergency surgery.

According to Corporal Michael Schoone, an investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Officials are looking into whether the dog’s paw inadvertently pulled the trigger or if there was a malfunction with the firearm. A spent shell casing was found inside the shotgun, raising significant concerns about gun safety practices.

“This incident is a perfect storm of circumstances,” said Corporal Schoone. “It was just the right place at the right time, or the wrong time.”

At the time of the accident, the man was reportedly alone in his home with his son in a separate room and two other dogs present. The condition of the injured man remains unclear as authorities continue to gather information.

Police are reminding gun owners of the “cardinal rules” of firearm safety, urging them to always keep guns pointed in a safe direction and fingers off the trigger when not in use.
