UPDATE: Easton Area High School football team delivered a stunning performance against rival Phillipsburg, winning 35-6 in a decisive matchup at Lafayette College’s Fisher Stadium on November 23, 2023. This victory marks a historic moment for Easton, achieving the most wins in a single season with 14 victories.

Senior lineman Anthony Diaz turned his final game into a personal triumph, scoring a touchdown after recovering a blocked punt, a moment he described as a “dream come true.” Diaz’s touchdown extended Easton’s lead to 21-0 just five minutes into the second quarter, setting the tone for a commanding win.

With momentum swinging in their favor, Easton players showcased their strength, particularly senior Sean Kilpatrick, who blocked the crucial punt that led to Diaz’s score. “To get a big play like that, it was a real momentum swing,” Kilpatrick stated, highlighting the importance of the play in the high-stakes rivalry.

Easton coach Matt Senneca praised the team’s effort, noting that the victory was a culmination of hard work from a dedicated senior class. “We have a hell of a senior class… they decided that they weren’t going to let the same old thing happen to them,” Senneca said, emphasizing the turnaround from previous seasons.

After a brief setback with their only turnover of the game, Easton quickly regained control. Following a personal foul that gave Phillipsburg a first-and-10 from their 24, Easton’s defensive duo of seniors Skyler Fowlin and Algee Macon combined to force a fumble, allowing senior Elijah Edwards to recover. This led to a 15-yard touchdown run by senior running back Chris Martinez, further solidifying Easton’s dominance.

Macon, who was named the game’s defensive MVP, expressed pride in the team’s performance, stating, “It feels great. All the work paid off.” He also contributed a critical strip sack in the fourth quarter, which set up Easton’s final touchdown by quarterback Cole Ordway.

Ordway, who was the offensive MVP, shined with 108 rushing yards, crediting his offensive line for their outstanding performance. “That line we have is something special. I’d take them over anybody,” he remarked, reflecting on the team’s synergy and determination.

Easton’s defense was formidable, holding Phillipsburg to just 135 rushing yards, a significant achievement against a team known for its physical style of play. Kilpatrick noted the team’s preparation, stating, “We just knew we had to match their intensity, we had to match their physicality. We came out here and did that today.”

With this victory, Easton football not only avenged their previous losses to Phillipsburg but also stamped their mark in the school’s history. The team, two years removed from a disheartening season, demonstrated a remarkable turnaround, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and resilience.

“For the past couple of years, Easton football wasn’t as good… I’m glad, this team, we put it on the map,” Macon added, summarizing the pride and determination shared by his teammates.

As Easton celebrates this significant win, all eyes will be on the future and the legacy this senior class leaves behind, promising to inspire future generations of Easton football.
