UPDATE: In a major breakthrough, authorities have indicted eight men in connection with a sophisticated auto theft ring operating in New York City. The operation, which spanned over four years, has resulted in losses exceeding $2 million, according to police and federal prosecutors.

The NYPD revealed that the thieves primarily targeted Honda, Acura, and Jeep vehicles, particularly favoring late model Honda CRVs. They executed their thefts under the cover of darkness, swiftly stealing vehicles parked on the streets of the Bronx and Queens. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny stated, “These thieves were very sophisticated, very complex. They could steal a car in less than two minutes.”

Authorities confirmed that the gang employed a methodical approach, using traditional techniques to break into vehicles while also utilizing advanced technology to reprogram keys. This dual strategy allowed them to operate with alarming speed and efficiency.

The indictment reveals that the group targeted around 1,000 vehicles, favoring specific colors and models, particularly black and white Hondas with dark interiors. After stealing the cars, the suspects transported them to New Jersey, where they altered the VIN numbers and forged documentation to sell the stolen vehicles on platforms like Facebook Marketplace.

United States Attorney Jay Clayton emphasized the significant financial impact of this operation, stating, “As alleged, the operation caused millions of dollars in losses.”

The investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement is urging the public to remain vigilant against auto theft. This case highlights a growing trend in organized vehicle theft and underscores the need for increased awareness among vehicle owners.

Authorities are now focused on tracking down additional suspects and preventing further thefts as they continue to unravel this complex criminal network. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops.
