El Reno Community Unites to Honor Fallen Sgt. Thomas Duran
UPDATE: The city of El Reno, Oklahoma, is in mourning as it honors the memory of Sgt. Thomas Duran, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty. Duran was struck by a vehicle on October 17, 2023, prompting an outpouring of grief and support from the community.
In a moving tribute, family, friends, and law enforcement personnel from across the state gathered at OU Medical on Thursday night for an emotional honor walk. Duran’s family upheld his wish to be an organ donor, illustrating his enduring commitment to serve others even in death. “It’s admirable beyond words that even in the worst times, Sgt. Duran is still giving back to this community,” remarked Mark Nelson, President of the Fraternal Order of Police.
Outside the El Reno Police Station, dozens of flowers adorned a police car, a poignant symbol of the community’s grief and gratitude. “We took that call knowing it’s one of yours, one of your own, and it’s difficult,” said Chief Ken Brown. “Imagine even a loss or injury to a family member.” The emotional weight of Duran’s passing is felt deeply among his colleagues and the community he served.
At the nearby Elks Lodge, community members are rallying to support Duran’s family through a fundraising event. “100% of everything that comes in tonight, including tips, is going right back to the family,” stated Jared Holden, highlighting the collective effort to provide financial assistance during this difficult time. The event features a $10 spaghetti dinner, creating an opportunity for residents to come together to heal and support one another.
“It’s been a beautiful coming together as well to support this event,” Holden added. “You don’t just have people from our community come in and support it; you have people from other communities. So, I think it just goes to show that this community is strong, and there’s nothing going to hold us down.”
The El Reno community’s swift response to honor and support Duran’s family demonstrates the profound impact he had on those around him. As the memorials continue and the fundraising efforts grow, the legacy of Sgt. Thomas Duran lives on in the hearts of those he served.
The community is encouraged to participate in ongoing memorials and fundraisers to honor Duran’s sacrifice and support his family during this challenging time. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
