Experts Urge Daily Foot Washing to Prevent Bacterial Growth
UPDATE: Experts are sounding the alarm on foot hygiene, emphasizing that daily washing is crucial to prevent bacterial overgrowth. With billions of bacteria thriving on your feet, neglecting this area can lead to potential infections.
In a recent statement from Tanya Nino, a dermatologist with Providence St. Joseph Medical Heritage Group, she highlighted that the soles of your feet contain an astonishing 600 sweat glands per square centimeter, more than any other part of the body. “We call those eccrine glands,” Nino explained. “When you get over-moisture, that’s when the skin can get macerated, which can lead to fungus and yeast overgrowth.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that Americans wash their feet daily, particularly those who wear closed-toe shoes for extended periods. Krystal Malhotra, a nurse who spends 10 to 12 hours on her feet, shared her routine: “I start at the top, then I do the bottom and go in between the toes every day,” she said.
Experts warn that the area between the toes can become humid, especially for those in closed shoes. Nino cautioned that individuals with poor circulation, such as those with diabetes, must pay extra attention to foot hygiene. “If you have a cut and you don’t know it, then yes, it can become an infection,” she noted.
While Nino advocates for a daily rinse for most people, she advises against using harsh soaps that can strip the skin of its natural barrier. “Some soaps can be too harsh,” she stated, emphasizing that a gentle wash is sufficient for optimal foot care.
The urgency of this message resonates deeply, as Malhotra expressed her fears about foot odor: “I’m so scared of getting stinky feet!”
As foot hygiene becomes a pressing health topic, experts urge everyone to incorporate daily foot washing into their routines. Ensure your feet are completely dry after washing to prevent bacterial growth.
