FAA Cuts 10% of Flights at 40 Airports Amid Shutdown Crisis
URGENT UPDATE: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has just announced a major reduction in flight capacity across the United States, impacting 40 major airports due to the ongoing government shutdown. Effective Friday, October 13, 2023, travelers should brace for significant disruptions, including cancellations and delays.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that this move aims to ensure passenger safety amid staffing shortages affecting air traffic controllers and TSA agents. The FAA’s capacity reduction will initially throttle flights by 10%, but this could escalate if the shutdown prolongs.
Airports in major cities like Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago are among those most affected. As a result, aviation data analytics firm Cirium estimates that up to 1,800 flights could be impacted starting Friday, with disruptions likely increasing as the capacity cuts take full effect next week.
The fallout from this reduction is already visible. On Wednesday alone, over 4,100 flights were delayed, with an additional 171 cancellations, according to FlightAware. The repercussions extend beyond passenger travel; cargo operations at airports such as Memphis and Louisville will also face challenges, potentially delaying package deliveries.
Passengers flying private jets should note that Teterboro Airport in New Jersey is included in the FAA’s list of affected locations. The aviation system is incredibly sensitive to disruptions; a single incident can cause nationwide chaos.
Travelers are strongly advised to check with their airlines for updates on their flights before heading to the airport. With the situation developing rapidly, those planning to fly should stay informed and prepare for the possibility of extensive delays and cancellations.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, and the FAA has indicated that further capacity cuts could be implemented if the government shutdown continues. This is a critical moment for air travel in the U.S., and the impact on millions of travelers is expected to be substantial.
