Father-to-Be Dies After Alleged Intentional Crash; Charges Upgraded
URGENT UPDATE: The family of a father-to-be who tragically died following a car crash in Florida is speaking out, expressing satisfaction with the upgraded charges against his girlfriend, Leigha Mumby. The 24-year-old was charged with vehicular homicide earlier this week after the death of Daniel Waterman, who succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash on October 8, 2025.
Waterman, a 22-year-old New York native and expectant father, was a passenger when Mumby allegedly crashed the vehicle on an interstate in Flagler County back in February. Reports indicate that Waterman suffered severe injuries, including a broken neck and back, and spent months fighting for his life in the hospital. His condition had deteriorated to the point where he was in a coma before recovering enough to speak with investigators.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Waterman reportedly told officers from his hospital bed that Mumby intentionally caused the crash, stating, “I don’t care what happens. You’ll get what you deserve.” This shocking revelation has intensified the legal proceedings against Mumby, who was initially charged with reckless driving causing serious bodily injury and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
John Hager, attorney for Waterman’s family, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “There are no real winners in this situation. It’s a terrible, horrible situation… the family is satisfied with how the State Attorney’s office in Flagler County has been working diligently.” Hager’s comments underscore the emotional toll this tragedy has taken on those involved.
Mumby was booked into the Flagler County Jail following the upgraded charge and was released after posting a $150,000 bond. She has pleaded not guilty to the allegations, but the legal battle continues as the case gains public attention.
An obituary for Waterman poignantly reflects on his life, noting he was eagerly anticipating the arrival of his baby girl. “Daniel passed away after courageously fighting for eight months from injuries sustained in a crash,” it stated, highlighting his enthusiasm for fatherhood and the love he held for his family.
The crash occurred on a section of I-95 North in Flagler County, a location now marked by tragedy. Waterman’s grandfather revealed the extent of his injuries, saying, “He broke everything. He was scratched up all over the place.”
As legal proceedings unfold, the family continues to seek justice for Waterman, whose life was cut short in a devastating incident that has left a lasting impact on the community. The case serves as a grim reminder of the potential consequences of reckless behavior behind the wheel.
