GambleAware Unveils Urgent Resources for Neurodivergent Gamblers
URGENT UPDATE: GambleAware, Britain’s leading problem gambling charity, has just announced critical new resources aimed at supporting neurodivergent individuals adversely affected by gambling. This initiative directly addresses the alarming findings in their latest report, which reveals that neurodivergent players, particularly those with ADHD and autism, are at an elevated risk of gambling addiction.
This urgent release highlights six key principles to aid therapists and practitioners in effectively reaching and helping these vulnerable populations. Research indicates that neurodivergent individuals often gamble to cope with loneliness or due to impulsivity, leading to significant gambling harms.
Paul Nash, a representative with lived experience, shared his personal journey, stating that autistic individuals may become fixated on gambling routines. He noted, “For me, it was the connection to my favorite hobby and the chance to win money.” Despite his fortunate recovery, Nash’s story underscores the severe challenges many face in accessing help.
GambleAware’s new resources, developed in collaboration with IFF Research and experts from the University of Bristol, aim to dismantle barriers to support. The charity found that many neurodivergent individuals are unaware of available services or are deterred by stigma, making this initiative vital.
Among the six principles outlined by GambleAware are:
1. Tailoring communication to meet diverse needs.
2. Ensuring clarity to enhance understanding.
3. Supporting autonomy and independence.
4. Creating environments that mitigate sensory overstimulation.
5. Encouraging self-directed support approaches.
6. Training staff in neurodiversity awareness.
Anna Hargrave, CEO of GambleAware, emphasized the urgent need for these resources, stating, “The hyperfocus, impulsivity, and social challenges faced by many neurodivergent individuals are significant contributors to gambling harm.” She further noted the shame and stigma that often prevent these players from seeking the help they desperately need.
The release of these resources comes amid a broader push for inclusivity in treatment, designed to bridge critical gaps in understanding how gambling impacts neurodivergent individuals. GambleAware aims to equip practitioners with the tools necessary to provide effective, empathetic support.
In addition to these resources, GambleAware recently published a paper analyzing the current state of Britain’s online gambling regulations, assessing their relevance in today’s digital age.
As this story develops, the importance of recognizing and addressing the unique needs of neurodivergent gamblers cannot be overstated. Stakeholders and practitioners are urged to integrate these insights into their practices to foster a more inclusive gambling treatment environment.
