Giants Sign Top Prospect Luis Hernandez to $5M Deal Today
BREAKING: The San Francisco Giants have just signed Luis Hernandez, the top-rated prospect in this year’s international amateur draft, to a staggering $5 million deal. This urgent development comes as the international signing period officially kicked off on December 1, 2026.
Hernandez, just 17 years old, recently fled the political turmoil in his native Venezuela, arriving in the Dominican Republic to finalize his contract with the Giants. Senior director of international scouting, Joe Salermo, confirmed the signing during a press conference, emphasizing the safety of their players amidst the unrest. “Our scouts stayed home for a couple of days with the family until it was safe for them to go out on the road,” Salermo stated.
This signing is significant for the Giants, who view Hernandez as a player with remarkable potential. Salermo highlighted Hernandez’s maturity and strong character, noting, “He is above his age for his maturity… He plays golf, which shows the advancement he has had.”
In addition to Hernandez, the Giants were keenly aware of other top prospects in the draft. Following closely behind Hernandez were Johenssy Colome of the Athletics and Francisco Renteria of the Philadelphia Phillies, both of whom signed deals worth $4 million and $3.9 million, respectively.
The signing period, which runs until December 15, has already seen more than 170 players finalize contracts. Teams began with budgets ranging from $5.44 million to $8.03 million for signing bonuses, with the potential to increase their total by 60% through trades. For instance, the New York Mets offset their lower budget by acquiring $1.5 million in signing allotment from Cleveland.
Other notable agreements include Dominican outfielder Angel Nuñez signing with the Cincinnati Reds for $3 million, and Venezuelan catcher Manuel Bolivar joining the Detroit Tigers for $2,297,500.
As the international signing period unfolds, fans and analysts alike are eager to see where these emerging talents will fit into their teams. The Giants’ investment in Hernandez could signal a strategic move towards building a stronger roster for the future.
Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops, and watch for Hernandez’s potential rapid rise within the Giants’ minor league system.
