Lakers Rookie Scores First Points, Giannis Saves Game Ball Drama
UPDATE: In an electrifying game on November 11, 2023, the Los Angeles Lakers decisively defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 119-95, but the most memorable moment came after the final buzzer when a game ball dispute unfolded following rookie Adou Thiero‘s first NBA points.
As the Lakers celebrated a commanding victory, Thiero, who had just returned from injury, scored four points, including a thrilling dunk in the last minute. However, the postgame festivities took an unexpected turn when Lakers forward Jarred Vanderbilt attempted to secure the game ball for Thiero. Crew chief Pat Fraher intervened, claiming the ball belonged to the Bucks and confiscated it before presenting it to a team attendant.
In a surprising twist, Giannis Antetokounmpo stepped in to resolve the situation, taking the ball from the attendant and handing it to Lakers star Luka Doncic. “That shows a lot of class,” said Lakers guard Austin Reaves, highlighting Giannis’s sportsmanship amid the unexpected custody struggle.
Vanderbilt expressed his confusion over Fraher’s decision, stating, “He said he’s going to write me up. I don’t know what the hell he’s talking about.” The referee’s ruling sparked discussions among players, indicating a possible overreach of authority.
This incident echoes a previous game in Milwaukee nearly two years ago, when a similar conflict arose over a game ball for rookie Oscar Tshiebwe while Giannis scored a career-high 64 points. However, this time, the situation resolved amicably, allowing Thiero to receive the ball later in the locker room from Doncic.
Reflecting on the moment, Thiero said, “At first, I didn’t realize it was all for me. But I’m very thankful for this team. I think that shows how connected we are and how much we want each other to succeed.”
The Lakers, now standing at 10-4 overall, are currently positioned No. 4 in the Western Conference after completing a five-game road trip. The victory was particularly significant as the team coped with the absence of Marcus Smart and Rui Hachimura due to injuries, while waiting for the return of LeBron James from sciatica, potentially as soon as Tuesday against the Utah Jazz.
Vanderbilt added, “Either way, I’m glad he got [the game ball]. He deserves it. That’s a big-time achievement, accomplishment, scoring your first NBA points, especially in a win.”
As the Lakers look forward to their next matchup, this heartwarming moment underscores the camaraderie and spirit of the team, leaving fans eagerly anticipating what’s next.
