UPDATE: The Seattle Mariners have just announced they are exercising their $7 million club option on closer Andres Munoz for the 2026 season, according to reports from The Seattle Times. This decision underscores Munoz’s critical role as one of the top closers in Major League Baseball, having tallied an impressive 60 saves over the past two seasons with a remarkable 1.92 ERA.

This past season, Munoz, a two-time All-Star, finished with a record of 3-3 and 38 saves, allowing only two home runs in 62.1 innings pitched. His performance in the postseason was also notable; he contributed 8.1 scoreless innings to help the Mariners reach the decisive Game 7 of the ALCS.

However, in a pivotal moment of the season, the Mariners faced a tough decision. Leading 3-1 in the seventh inning of Game 7 against the Toronto Blue Jays, Manager Dan Wilson opted for Eduard Bazardo instead of Munoz to face George Springer, who hit a three-run home run that changed the course of the game.

Munoz’s contract includes an increase of $1 million based on games finished in 2025, along with additional options for $8 million in 2027 and $10 million for 2028. His salaries can escalate by up to $2 million depending on his performance.

Acquired by the Mariners in August 2020 as part of a trade with the San Diego Padres, Munoz has established himself as a dominant force on the mound. Known for his fastball that averages 98 mph and his slider, which he utilized over 50% of the time in 2025—holding batters to a striking .109 average—he has proven his value to the team.

As the Mariners prepare for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on Munoz to see if he can continue his exceptional performance and lead the team in its quest for postseason success. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how this decision will impact the Mariners’ strategy moving forward.

Stay tuned for more updates as the Mariners finalize their roster for the 2026 season!
