Miami Heat’s Terry Rozier Arrested in FBI Gambling Probe
BREAKING NEWS: Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier was arrested early Thursday morning in connection with an urgent FBI investigation into sports betting, according to sources confirmed by ESPN’s Shams Charania. The Eastern District of New York and FBI Director Kash Patel are set to hold a news conference at 10 a.m. ET to provide further details on the arrests linked to this escalating gambling scandal.
Rozier’s arrest occurred at a hotel in Orlando, Florida, following the Heat’s recent road loss to the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night. Notably, Rozier did not participate in the game due to a coach’s decision, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding his arrest.
Reports indicate that suspicious betting patterns emerged surrounding Rozier’s performance. On March 23, 2023, an unexpected surge of wagers on the under for Rozier’s points, rebounds, and assists led sportsbooks to halt betting on his statistics entirely. This incident coincided with Rozier playing only 10 minutes in the game before leaving due to a reported foot injury.
The investigation is part of a larger scandal already involving former Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter, who was banned from the NBA in spring 2024 for his role in a gambling scheme focused on player prop bets. Porter has pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges, admitting in court to manipulating his performance in two games during the 2023-24 season. He is currently awaiting sentencing in December.
In light of these events, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver addressed the issue during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” stating that the league is actively working with sportsbooks to prevent manipulation attempts. “We’ve asked some of our partners to pull back some of the prop bets, especially when they’re on two-way players,” Silver noted, emphasizing the need for increased control to safeguard the integrity of the game.
As this story develops, fans and analysts alike are keenly watching how the NBA and its affiliates respond to this pressing issue. The implications of Rozier’s arrest and the ongoing investigation could have significant repercussions for the league and its players.
