UPDATE: The highly anticipated Hulu special, “HIV Unwrapped,” is set to premiere on November 30, 2023, bringing a groundbreaking fusion of fashion and science to the forefront of the fight against HIV stigma. This innovative project features design students from the Parsons School of Design collaborating with leading HIV researchers to reshape narratives surrounding the virus.

Executive producer Karl Schmid expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are taking complex science and fashion—two worlds you wouldn’t normally think come together—and they do.” Schmid, who has previously showcased this project in Australia, England, and Rwanda, is bringing this powerful conversation to New York City, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in addressing societal challenges.

The documentary-style special will provide viewers with exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the fashion show, illustrating how garments were crafted and highlighting the vital partnerships formed between designers and scientists. Schmid believes that “just showing a conversation between two seemingly opposite worlds can create something phenomenal,” aiming to inspire change and awareness in the ongoing battle against HIV.

“This project is not just about fashion; it’s about creating ideas and telling unique stories,” stated Shreya Jani, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs at Gilead Sciences. She emphasized the beauty of science and the role of fashion as a medium to remind audiences of the critical need to end HIV. The special aims to showcase diverse experiences of individuals living with HIV, reminding viewers that they are “more than the worst thing that has happened to us.”

Participants like Bianca Ordoñez highlighted the importance of sharing personal stories, declaring, “We all have different experiences, and I just want to show the world that we can be incredible and beautiful regardless of our HIV status.”

“HIV Unwrapped” will also air on the ABC Owned Television Stations’ Localish Network on December 1, 2023, coinciding with World AIDS Day. This dual launch aims to maximize the reach and impact of the campaign, pushing for greater awareness and understanding of HIV.

As the premiere date approaches, the urgency to engage in discussions surrounding HIV and stigma has never been more critical. The collaboration between fashion and science in “HIV Unwrapped” serves as a powerful reminder of the creativity and hope that can emerge when diverse fields come together.

Stay tuned for the premiere and join the conversation to help end the stigma around HIV.
