New York Elections 2025: Democrats Surge, Major Mayoral Shifts
BREAKING: New York voters have made significant political shifts in the 2025 elections, with Democrats securing major victories in key mayoral races. In a historic turn, Dorcey Applyrs in Albany and Sharon Owens in Syracuse have both been elected as the first Black female mayors of their cities, as results continue to roll in just hours after the polls closed on November 7, 2025.
This election marks a decisive moment for Democrats, as they continue their dominance in major cities across the state. Buffalo has elected Sean Ryan, the first new mayor in 20 years, while Malik Evans easily secured a second term in Rochester. The Democratic victors demonstrated overwhelming public support, with both Applyrs and Owens garnering over 70% of the vote, while Albany and Rochester mayors exceeded 80%.
The implications of these elections are profound. Democrats have not only reinforced their stronghold in urban areas but have also made significant inroads in local government. In Onondaga County, Democrats are poised to gain control of the county legislature for the first time in decades, a shift that could impact critical infrastructure projects including the Micron semiconductor project and a new county aquarium.
In Monroe County, Democrats flipped five seats in towns such as Greece, where Jeffery McCann will be the first Democratic town supervisor in over a century. Additionally, Thomas Lyon defeated incumbent Republican Bob Palumbo for mayor in Canandaigua, showcasing the growing momentum for the Democratic Party across the state.
While Democrats celebrated, Republicans had their victories too. Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus won a fourth term, and Bruce Blakeman secured a second term in Nassau County. However, the day’s events have sparked tensions, particularly in Troy where Democrats have taken all City Council seats, raising questions about a controversial plan to relocate city hall.
In a closely watched statewide ballot measure, New Yorkers voted on a proposal allowing the Olympic Regional Development Authority to develop on 350 acres of protected land near Lake Placid. With 99% of precincts reporting, the “yes” vote led with 46% compared to 42% for “no.” This contentious issue has seen significant opposition from New York City residents, particularly in the Bronx and Brooklyn, where “no” votes prevailed by margins of up to 15 points.
The rise of Zohran Mamdani as the new mayor of New York City is a focal point for both parties, emphasizing the affordability crisis. Endorsed by Governor Kathy Hochul, Mamdani’s election poses new challenges for Republicans, who are framing him as a symbol of the Democratic Party’s leftward shift. U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik has been vocal in her criticism, stating that Hochul is now “owned lock, stock, and barrel by the radical Far Left Socialist takeover.”
With the dust still settling from the elections, the impact on New York’s political landscape will be felt as the state prepares for 2026 gubernatorial elections and upcoming congressional races. As Democrats celebrate their victories, Republicans are gearing up to counter Mamdani’s agenda, aiming to leverage the divide within the state’s electorate.
Stay tuned for further updates as results continue to unfold and the implications of these elections become clearer.
