Niina Petrokina Dominates Short Program at European Skating Championships
UPDATE: Niina Petrokina has surged to the top of the leaderboard in the short program at the European Figure Skating Championships in Sheffield, England, setting the stage for her title defense ahead of the 2024 Winter Olympics. Just announced, Petrokina scored an impressive 70.61 points, a personal best that showcases her remarkable comeback after undergoing Achilles tendon surgery in October.
In a stunning display of skill, the Estonian skater executed a flawless routine, including a challenging triple lutz-triple toeloop combination. Her performance not only eclipsed her previous short program score from last year’s championships but also firmly positioned her as the favorite to retain her European title.
Following Petrokina is Belgium’s Nina Pinzarrone, who secured the second spot with a score of 64.97 points. Just behind her, Italy’s Anna Pezzetta is close on her heels with 64.85 points. Meanwhile, Loena Hendrickx, the reigning European champion from Belgium, sits in fifth place with a score of 61.42 points after struggling with a fall.
“I’m thrilled to be back on the ice,” Petrokina said after her performance. “It feels like a dream to have scored this high.”
In pairs, the competition is equally intense. Georgia’s duo of Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava lead the pack with a short program score of 75.96 points, overtaking defending champions Minerva Hase and Nikita Volodin of Germany, who managed 74.81 points. Hungary’s Maria Pavlova and Alexei Sviatchenko follow in third with 73.32 points.
Notably, all top pairs, except for Hase, were born in Russia but now represent various countries. The absence of Russian teams at this championship, due to ongoing sanctions, has created a unique dynamic in the competition.
The stakes are high as the pairs free skate is set for Thursday, followed by the women’s free skate on Friday. With Petrokina’s stellar performance, eyes are now on her potential to reclaim her title and shine on the Olympic stage.
As the championships unfold, fans and analysts alike will be closely watching the developments, especially in light of the upcoming Winter Olympics. Stay tuned for more updates as this story progresses.
