North Reading Stuns Medfield, Advances to Semifinals with 21-20 Win
UPDATE: In a stunning turnaround, the fifth-seeded North Reading Hornets overcame a 13-point deficit to defeat the fourth-seeded Medfield Warriors 21-20 in the Division 5 quarterfinals, securing their spot in the state semifinals. The thrilling victory took place at Calvin George Fisher Field on Friday night, marking a pivotal moment in their season.
North Reading’s defense, which had been challenged throughout the season, delivered an extraordinary performance by shutting out Medfield in the second half. The Hornets managed to stop Medfield’s high-octane offense, which had dominated opponents all season, allowing only one first down during the Warriors’ first three drives of the half.
Head coach Ed Blum praised his team’s determination, stating, “The kids played great fundamental, team defense. They just dug deep and made a lot of plays. It was incredible.”
Medfield, boasting a 9-1 record, initially took a commanding lead with three rushing touchdowns from different players, pushing the score to 20-7 at halftime. However, North Reading (also 9-1) was not ready to concede.
The Hornets ignited their comeback with a touchdown from Otto Indelicato, who scored on a wildcat play to narrow the gap to 20-14 with just over five minutes left in the third quarter. The momentum shifted further in the fourth quarter when quarterback Jason Berry executed a brilliant play, pitching the ball to star receiver Brady, who dashed for a 13-yard touchdown that gave North Reading the lead for the first time in the match.
“Great blocking by the linemen, just great offensive execution to get the job done,” Brady remarked after the game, highlighting the teamwork that propelled their success.
As the clock wound down, North Reading’s defense faced a crucial test. Medfield drove to the Hornets’ 18-yard line in the final seconds, but North Reading stood firm, forcing back-to-back incompletions to seal the dramatic win.
Blum reflected on the team’s resilience, stating, “When you get in moments of this adversity, it’s doing it for each other and digging a little deeper. They just had a little bit more and again, each play they just kept doing it. It was awesome.”
With this exhilarating victory, North Reading now sets its sights on the state semifinal, where they will face the top-seeded Shawsheen. Fans and supporters are eager to see if the Hornets can continue their momentum and defy the odds once again.
As the season progresses, this remarkable comeback serves as a testament to the power of teamwork and determination in high school sports. Stay tuned for more updates on North Reading’s journey in the playoffs.
