URGENT UPDATE: The highly anticipated photography exhibit, ‘The Black Land: Rituals and Rejoicing’, opens today at Oklahoma Contemporary, showcasing the powerful connection between Oklahoma’s black cowboy heritage and the community’s deep-rooted traditions. Curated by renowned photographer Jakian Parks and creative partner Chloe Flowers, this exhibit reflects years of dedication to documenting the essence of black rodeos and the pride in land ownership.

Parks, donning his signature black Stetson and roper heels, expresses, “This is like a homecoming for me.” His journey began with a childhood fascination for rodeos, and now he stands surrounded by images that tell a profound story of resilience, culture, and identity. The exhibit features stunning photographs taken at significant locations, including a ranch in Jones, OK, a church in Arcadia, OK, and the annual rodeo in Boley, OK.

The importance of this work has not gone unnoticed. Executive Director Trent Riley emphasizes that the exhibit interconnects a historic part of Oklahoma’s black history with the modern narrative of black cowboys today. “He has a vision. He has an idea,” says Foster, a longtime friend of Parks and a collaborator in selecting the photos. “My job is to make it happen.”

The exhibit dives into themes of self-determination and community celebration, inviting visitors to experience a different shade of The West, imbued with determination and pride. Parks and Flowers meticulously selected images that represent not just the visual beauty but also the rich stories behind them, opening “windows, barn doors, and rodeo gates” to a world where tradition thrives.

As excitement builds, art enthusiasts and community members are encouraged to visit ‘The Black Land’ exhibit to witness this unique portrayal of Oklahoma’s culture. For more details on the exhibit and the impactful work of Jakian Parks, click here.
