Pelicans’ Kevon Looney Out 2-3 Weeks with Knee Injury
URGENT UPDATE: New Orleans Pelicans center Kevon Looney is set to miss the start of the NBA season due to a significant left knee injury. The Pelicans announced just moments ago that Looney will be sidelined for at least two to three weeks following a diagnosis of a proximal tibiofibular ligament sprain.
The injury occurred during a preseason exhibition game on October 5, 2023, in Australia against the South East Melbourne Phoenix. This setback comes as the Pelicans prepare to kick off their regular season on October 22 at Memphis, raising concerns over their roster depth.
Looney, a seasoned player entering his 11th NBA season, was a key acquisition for the Pelicans this offseason as they look to bolster their lineup. Previously, he contributed to three championship teams with the Golden State Warriors. Throughout his career, Looney has averaged 5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, making him a pivotal presence in the paint.
With Looney out, the Pelicans will rely on Yves Missi, their promising first-round draft pick from Baylor. Missi made a strong impression in his rookie season, starting 67 games and averaging 9.1 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, which positions him as a critical player in the upcoming games.
This injury not only impacts the Pelicans’ immediate strategy but also raises questions about their ability to compete in the challenging Western Conference landscape. Fans are eagerly awaiting further updates, especially as the team gears up for its opening night.
As the situation develops, the Pelicans are expected to make further announcements regarding Looney’s rehabilitation. Stay tuned for more updates on this critical story that affects both the team’s dynamics and their season outlook.
