Public Schools Launch Aggressive Marketing to Combat Enrollment Drop
UPDATE: Public schools across the United States are urgently implementing aggressive marketing strategies to combat alarming enrollment declines. Amidst a projected 7.6% drop in public school enrollment, which could result in nearly 4 million students lost by 2031, school administrators are taking drastic measures to promote their offerings.
With the rise of private schools and a school choice movement intensifying, public schools are stepping up their efforts to attract families. “Allow everyone to compete,” asserts Brian Stephens, CEO of Caissa Public Strategy, which is assisting many schools in this critical undertaking. He believes that without proper marketing, public schools risk closure, which could have devastating societal effects.
Schools in Broward County, Florida, are at the forefront of this initiative. Administrators are showcasing their programs through parent tours, community showcases, and targeted digital advertisements. Stephanie Saban, principal at Coral Cove Academy of the Arts, stated, “I was the one doing every school tour, all 60 of them.” These efforts aim to present a compelling case to parents about the benefits of enrolling their children in public schools.
Some schools are employing innovative tactics to reach potential students. For instance, Stephen’s firm conducts “secret shopping,” where staff pose as parents to gain insight into the school experience from a parent’s perspective. “It takes as many as 21 contacts to explain to a parent all their choices,” Stephen shared, emphasizing the need for comprehensive outreach.
As the competition heats up, Gastride Harrigan, principal at Millennium 6-12 Collegiate Academy, recognizes the pressing need for effective marketing. He points out that his school’s unique offering of allowing students to graduate with an associate degree alongside their high school diploma serves as a significant draw. “Competition is fierce, and it’s constant showcasing the program,” Harrigan explained.
On December 9, Broward County Public Schools will host a showcase, promoting K-12 magnet programs and innovative curriculum offerings tailored for student success. Schools like Northeast High School are also actively participating in these promotional events, leveraging community engagement to boost interest. Principal Anthony Valachovic highlighted that their targeted programs have led to a notable increase in enrollment from 1,689 to 1,822 students in just one academic year.
The urgency for public schools to enhance their marketing efforts cannot be overstated. With external factors like declining birth rates and increasing competition from private institutions, effective messaging has become crucial. “Public schools are getting more and more in the game every day,” Stephens concluded, indicating a growing recognition of the necessity for schools to actively shape their narratives and attract families.
The stakes are high for public education, and as these marketing efforts unfold, the future of many schools hangs in the balance. Stay tuned for more updates on how public schools are adapting to these critical challenges.
