Right-Wing Outlet Faces Massive Libel Lawsuit Over False Claims
URGENT UPDATE: A right-wing media outlet, The Blaze, is facing serious repercussions after publishing a controversial article claiming to identify the person behind the pipe bombs planted at the Democratic and Republican National Committee headquarters during the January 6th Capitol attack. This report, which alleged that a female CIA employee was responsible, has quickly unraveled, exposing the outlet to a potential mammoth libel lawsuit.
Just days after its release, the article sparked widespread attention, being amplified by prominent figures including Trump appointee Kari Lake and several Republican lawmakers. Representative Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.) and Representative Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) shared the piece, while Representative Anna Paulina Luna claimed on social media, “A Capitol police officer placed a pipe bomb at the RNC on J6,” suggesting the article was definitive proof of wrongdoing.
However, the article’s credibility is rapidly deteriorating. Will Sommer of The Bulwark reports that the evidence presented is weak at best. The Blaze has not provided actual video comparisons or substantial details regarding the so-called “gait analysis.” Instead, it relies heavily on the analysis of a user named Armitas, a little-known figure whose profile image references a 1998 video game.
Adding to the chaos, both the Department of Justice and the FBI have declined to comment on the allegations, significantly undermining the story’s validity. The woman implicated by The Blaze has previously been targeted by far-right figures due to her involvement in law enforcement during the January 6 events, raising concerns that this may be a retaliatory attack on her character.
The Blaze’s initial claims have already prompted corrections. They falsely presented the woman as having worked on security detail for former CIA Director John Ratcliffe, when in fact she serves as a security guard. As the fallout continues, fewer right-wing outlets are picking up the story, and some lawmakers, including Luna, have quietly deleted their tweets promoting the article.
In a surprising turn, even prominent MAGA figures like Julie Kelly have criticized the story as “weak,” deepening divisions within far-right circles. Glenn Beck, who initially supported the article, has since refused to name the accused, stating, “This person of interest is still a citizen whose life carries the same dignity and presumption of innocence as yours and mine.”
This developing situation highlights the potential for serious legal consequences and raises critical questions about the integrity of information disseminated in politically charged environments. As the story unfolds, all eyes are on The Blaze and its ability to navigate the backlash from this significant misstep.
