Thanksgiving Travel Surges as Upstate NY Airports Prepare for Rush
UPDATE: This Thanksgiving is set to be the busiest travel season in 15 years, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). As airports throughout the country return to full operational capacity following the lifting of unprecedented flight restrictions, tens of thousands of travelers are expected to depart from upstate New York airports this week.
At Albany International Airport, officials anticipate that today, Wednesday, and Sunday will be the peak days for travel. Matt Hunter, director of communications at the airport, confirmed that over 5,000 passengers are expected to depart each day, with incoming flights seeing similar numbers.
Among those traveling are Jason Frazier and his family, who are part of the more than 17.8 million Americans flying to their Thanksgiving destinations this week. “Originally, I wanted to go a day earlier, but they didn’t have available flights,” Frazier stated. “We’re leaving sooner on Saturday versus Sunday because of our school schedule. I don’t want to risk getting stuck on the way back leaving out of Fort Worth.”
On the highways, travel is also surging. The American Automobile Association (AAA) predicts that at least 73 million drivers will hit the roads this holiday season, marking an increase of 1.3 million compared to last year.
Gina Martino Trubites, who is making the drive to the nation’s capital, shared her thoughts: “It’s a really nice drive. It only takes us about seven and a half to eight hours. This time of year, by the time you deal with the airport, you know, it’s so crazy.”
Travelers like Tiffany Riefstahl, who is heading to Massachusetts and Connecticut, are preparing to entertain their children during the trip. “I would rather have people come to my house, but we kind of moved away from family, so it makes sense for us to go where everyone else is,” Riefstahl explained.
Experts are urging travelers, whether on the road or in the air, to remain vigilant and plan for potential delays. “Always be aware of your surroundings, give yourself plenty of time, and keep an eye on the weather conditions,” they advise.
As the holiday approaches, the intense travel activity serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of Thanksgiving. The anticipation builds as families reunite across the nation, making this year’s holiday one to remember. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops.
