Thousands Honor Clara Luper at National Sit-In Plaza Dedication

UPDATE: Thousands gathered in downtown Oklahoma City on November 1, 2023, for the urgent dedication of the Clara Luper National Sit-In Plaza, commemorating a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement. This historic event celebrates the bravery of Clara Luper and the original 13 student members of the NAACP Youth Council, whose actions in 1958 led to the desegregation of Katz Drug Store and sparked a nationwide wave of sit-ins.

The new plaza, located at the historic Katz site on North Robinson Avenue and West Main Street, features a stunning 4-ton bronze lunch counter complete with life-sized depictions of the original sit-inners, including Luper and a Katz employee. This installation was crafted by the renowned art firm StudioEIS after four years of collaborative effort, reflecting the unity that characterized the original sit-in movement.

At the dedication ceremony, attendees enjoyed musical performances from local choirs and inspiring speeches from notable figures, including Marilyn Luper Hildreth, Clara’s daughter, and Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt. Hildreth emphasized the significance of the moment, stating, “For so long, this moment in Oklahoma City has been overlooked in the history books, yet it helped change the nation.”

The plaza’s dedication marked a powerful reminder of the courage exhibited by young activists. Hildreth recalled her own participation at just 10 years old, saying, “This sculpture ensures that future generations will remember that ordinary young people, acting together, can create extraordinary change.”

The project was funded entirely through private donations, raising over $1 million from generous supporters including the American Fidelity Foundation, Chickasaw Nation, and many community members. Developer John Kennedy stated, “This project represents a true community effort to honor the birthplace of the sit-in movement here in Oklahoma City.”

As the dedication concluded, guests were invited to explore the plaza, experiencing firsthand the legacy of the sit-in movement that continues to inspire activism today. The dedication not only honors a critical chapter in American history but also serves as a call to action for future generations, reminding everyone that even small actions can lead to significant change.
