URGENT UPDATE: Toyota’s innovative new V-8 engine could soon power more than just supercars. In a groundbreaking revelation, the head of powertrains at Toyota, Takashi Uehara, confirmed that this robust engine may fit under the hood of the iconic Land Cruiser (LC300).

During an interview with Australian media, Uehara stated that the V-8’s engine block is “somehow close” to the new 2.0-liter engine currently in testing for the GR Yaris M, hinting at a high level of modularity between Toyota’s latest powertrains. This flexibility means the V-8 could be adapted for various vehicle types, broadening its application beyond high-performance models.

Importantly, the V-8 engine is a twin-turbo 4.0-liter unit, essentially combining two 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines. Uehara noted that this engine could even be engineered as a diesel variant, complete with a full hybrid setup, aligning with Toyota’s commitment to sustainability and compliance with stringent emissions standards.

“We don’t rely on the PHEV system,” Uehara clarified, emphasizing that the V-8 will be installed in non-plug-in hybrid models.

While Uehara did not confirm if Toyota’s newly launched Century ultra-luxury brand would utilize this powertrain, it seems fitting for a flagship model. The upcoming Lexus Sport Coupe is expected to utilize this engine, and a new Toyota model, the GR GT, is set to debut on December 4, likely featuring the V-8 as well.

Power figures remain speculative, but estimates suggest that the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine could generate over 400 hp. Rumors indicate that an electrically assisted version of the V-8 might produce up to 900 hp, although these figures await official confirmation from Toyota or its performance division, Gazoo Racing (GR).

As Toyota explores the broader application of its new V-8, we may see this powerful engine installed in larger models such as the Land Cruiser (LC250, LC300), Sequoia, and Tundra. Additionally, a V-8 variant within the Lexus lineup, possibly in the GX or LX models, could enhance their appeal significantly.

With a strategic focus on economies of scale, Toyota’s push to deploy the V-8 engine across a wider range of vehicles promises to make their investment more worthwhile. As developments unfold, consumers eagerly anticipate how this engine will reshape Toyota’s offerings in the coming years.

Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops, and expect a significant shift in the automotive landscape with Toyota’s V-8 soon at the forefront.
