UPDATE: President Donald Trump has abruptly terminated trade negotiations with Canada following the release of a controversial advertisement by Ontario’s provincial government. The ad features critical comments about tariffs made by the late Ronald Reagan, sparking Trump’s outrage and accusations of “interference.”

In a post on Truth Social late Thursday, Trump declared, “The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about Tariffs.” He claimed the ad, which reportedly cost $75,000,000, was designed to disrupt the U.S. Supreme Court’s upcoming deliberations on his tariffs.

The U.S. Supreme Court is set to hear arguments next month regarding Trump’s tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Lower courts previously ruled these tariffs unlawful, which could result in the federal government being required to refund up to $1 trillion to American companies if the justices uphold those decisions.

Trump continued, “TARIFFS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THE NATIONAL SECURITY, AND ECONOMY, OF THE U.S.A.” He announced, “Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED.” This decision threatens to unravel the long-standing friendly relations between the U.S. and Canada, intensifying a trade war that has already impacted economies and job markets in both nations.

This latest development raises significant concerns about the future of U.S.-Canada trade relations. The tariffs imposed by Trump on various goods, including autos, aluminum, and steel, have already strained economic ties. With Trump effectively pulling the plug on negotiations, the repercussions could be severe for businesses and consumers alike.

As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on the Supreme Court’s upcoming hearings and the potential fallout from Trump’s shock announcement. The impact on American workers and Canadian exports remains to be seen, but the urgency of the matter is clear.

Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
